Cleansing the Body of Toxins
This week in our house, we decided to do a Kitchari cleanse, healing mind, body, and spirit through ancient Ayurvedic practices.
Have you ever done a cleanse?
Cleansing and detoxing aren’t a very common practice in Western Culture, I’d never heard of this until I started traveling and broadening my horizons. In the past, I’d have Doctors suggest eliminating certain foods to discover allergies or intolerances but never to cleanse or detox to HEAL THE BODY.
Truth is many or most Western doctors won’t ever mention cleansing as a way to help your mind and body overcome dis-ease. Why? Because they’re not taught about this in medical school. Any Doctor who knows about cleansing the body has done their own research and case study, this doctor is amazing because they’re few and far between.
In many other cultures doctors know about cleansing and make the necessary suggestions to help you heal, this is how I truly learned about cleansing. When I consulted with an Eastern medicine doctor in India, who I was going to work with in India to help me heal all the diseases of my body. Unfortunately, I haven’t made it there yet, because two weeks before my trip the world shut down and I went into cleanse mode on my own.
My Journey with Cleansing
In today’s modern world, we are inundated with information for the mind, consuming too many foods and beverages containing high chemicals, using chemical-induced products on the body or in the home, and overall consuming too much! In the US, we’re programmed to CONSUME. Consume food, alcohol, medication, products, etc. etc. And its all way too much for the body and mind to handle, however because we stay busy we aren’t consciously aware of the damage the average lifestyle is doing.
So over time we develop diseases in the mind and body. At first we’re greatly effected by this but over time, we learn this really weird artful skill of becoming used to what we shouldn’t and ignoring the issues at hand.
For example: I used to have daily migraines that ultimately went to 3-4 times per week. A surgery rectified my daily migraines but the weekly migraines went on for another decade before I tried to do anything about it. I had become so used to being in pain that instead of trying to resolve the pain, I invented new and creative ways to “manage it” and still get the job done. My management never helped though, it was a temporary fix for a long-term problem that had a long-term solution.
I first became the wiser that I could change this and eliminate more dis-ease in the body when someone suggested that I try going off Gluten to see if that helps get rid of the migraines. Do you know what? IT DID!!
After two weeks no gluten, my migraines went away. When I reintroduced gluten, they came back immediately, within minutes of eating the bread, so I stopped gluten completely almost 15 yrs ago, before it was popular and I’ve only felt better and better.
When 2020 hit and I was at home, I began an intense 6 months of detoxing disease. I suffered from all of the following:
Migraines (monthly not weekly)
Sinus infection 4-5x per year
UTI 4-5x per year
Strep throat or tonsilitis 4-6x per year
Autoimmune disease - IBS & POTS (both becoming popular diagnosis)
Mold exposure causing paranoia and anxiety
Arthritis
Depression & Anxiety
Fibromyalgia
Do you know how much I still suffer from today? ONE. IBS - because its more emotional than food-based like I was first taught. I still get depression and anxiety symptoms but again, those are emotional and I’ve learned how to prevent that through taking care of myself.
Why Cleanse and Detox the body?
As I mentioned, we’re programmed to consume. When we live this typical lifestyle, we must be aware of how it damages the self, we aren’t meant to consume as much as we do.
Consuming high levels of alcohol or processed food will build disease, they’re great going down but too much over time, without cleansing causes disease. When we take a pain pill or antibiotic when we’re sick, the chemicals in these reduce the immune system, put the nervous system out of alignment, and stay in the body for years after you stop taking them, continuing to wreck havoc.
Cleansing the body is the start to a lifestyle change that will only benefit you.
You can see all that I used to suffer from, needlessly so too but I didn’t know that I was making my body worse by trying to help it. Sometimes, this can be the case, it takes time and grace to learn things as you go along.

You’re not alone in that, but we need to call it like it is, madness. It’s total madness to get accustomed to being miserable. Some of life’s miseries cannot be altered but some can, for the areas that can be altered for the better, I say go for it!
What if you STOPPED the creative workarounds and took responsibility for your health and the betterment of your life? What do you have to lose?
Take for example: MUCUS. Most recoil at this word because we’ve looked at this substance as grotesque or filled with germs. However, the intention of mucus is pretty spectacular.
Within the body it’s always processing and detoxing naturally, mucus helps in this process. When the body detects disease, it builds mucus around the said ailment so that the body doesn’t continue to re-absorb the disease and the mucus can be eliminated naturally. The problem with most people is the mucus doesn’t detox because the body is already overworked…what happens when mucus cannot detox is the body eventually starts absorbing the mucus and the disease but then upon witnessing this, the body produces more mucus to hold the disease, but can’t detox, so it produces more and more. Do you see the pattern?
When the body is overloaded with toxins, it cannot detox properly and therefore reabsorbs the toxins it’s working so hard to eliminate.
Where you come in, is being mindful of what you’re eating, drinking, and overall consuming thats contributes to the body not working optimally. Then you help boost it along by cleansing regularly for years so that the body can function better on its own without the toxins.

Pharmaceuticals
Household chemicals, cleaners, or air fresheners
Wifi/radiation & other air pollutants
People or non ideal work / living environment

Benefits of Cleansing
To be honest, I think the benefits are far too many to list here and far too personal. So, for you, what would be the benefit of taking time for a cleanse of the body? What might improve for you?
For myself, I wanted to not be sick ALL THE TIME. Literally, it was monthly I was in the doctor for more and more pills to help me get better. Or I was doing my best holistically and preventatively to not get sick but because my body was so filled with toxins, it couldn’t get well.
